Inspired by the repetition of rhythmic rowing movements and the buoyant condition of the shell as it thrusts forward, the boathouse explores the language of flotation through a integrative construction and structural systems. Linear program volumes are suspended on a rigid-frame superstructure to create a volume-within-volume system, as operable membranes enable varying levels of climatization that grants energy efficiency and seasonal adaptability. The mechanical system is integrated into the vertical supports attached to each volume to radicalize the spatial effect of flotation, freeing up the ground space for the storage and display of rowing shells and permitting views towards Cayuga Lake.
Porous metal platforms and walkways fluidly connect the suspended volumes, amplifying the sensation of floating while allowing the free circulation of air and sound. Additionally, the construction and structural system allows easy addition or removal of suspended programs, conceptualizing a built place that adapts and evolves with time.
