Arts In Scentscapes
Healing Through Spaces of Art and Scent

“The senses are also a means of igniting imagination and of articulating sensory thought... ‘Memory and imagination remain associated’ (to scent).” - Pallasmaa, The Eyes of the Skin
The studio prompts an urban housing program in Ithaca for both human and non-human clients, proposed by the student. Responding to urban anxiety reflected in site graffiti, my proposal integrates art therapy and aromatherapy within a dual-purpose architecture: a private residence for art therapists and patients, and a public environment where herbs and flowers provide aromatherapy for visitors and local wildlife habitat.
Leveraging the stack effect, funnel structures enable passive ventilation, carrying scented air from ground-level gardens to cool upper spaces in summer. In winter, an HVAC system draws scents through the funnels, distributing them into rooms to achieve aroma mixing, infusing wood and fabric interiors. This project explores how architecture engages with natural systems and ephemeral phenomena to shape artistic, psychological, and sensory experienences.
